I have contacted my insurance company (marine) and advised them that they should require everybody who has a shore power connection on their boat should be required to upgrade to this system. Who knows if they will do it? However, one boat fire caused by an old type plug would more than pay for a LOT of these.

Just changed to the Smartplug system on my Jupiter 38', and also want to do so dockside. Is there any problem mounting another boatside plug in a waterproof box and wire my cord appropriately ?

I am very impressed with the SmartPlug system - my 85 yr old Father, who is a former engineer and boat captain for over 70 years sees your products as an exceptional innovation. As soon as the 50A product is avaiable, I may switch our 45' East Bay as well.

Thank You,

SmartPlug,
We love your SmartPlug Shore Power product here at North Ferry, where we use it to connect to the power inlet on our ferries each night. The shore side of the connection still uses a twist lock 30A connector on a pigtail. I've read you will be producing a new shore side connector in 2011. Would you be able to furnish a male cable connection before then? We would be able to use your current female cord connector on the pigtail and the hypothetical male cable plug to replace the twist lock on the other end of our cords. Such a male plug would also allow your other customers to make extension cables for their boats.
We would be glad to be a test site and purchase prototypes if you need some real world feedback.
Thanks in advance,
-- Bridg

[...] the fixtures...and without the fixtures, most people won't upgrade the boats... but the fact that they're now selling cords that are SmartPlug on the boat side and standard 30-amp on the shore side is a good start to transitioning from the older, twist-lock plugs to the newer SmartPlug fittings.
It is very apparent that this kind of thing could have been prevented. Maybe a new risk assessment is due at this facility. Bella

Hello Norman, the old twist style was never intended for outdoor use and with a climate like the one you’re in it can be even more dangerous. Our 30A SmartPlug Dual Configuration cordset is made out of PVC to allow for resistance to UV and has three waterproof seals to eliminate any moisture intrusion, ensuring a safe and dry connection. Additionally, SmartPlug Dual Configuration cordset is made with tinned wire which allows for an extra barrier of corrosion resistance. The cord will be available in July 2010. Please feel free to give us a call or email anytime with anymore questions you have! 206.285.2990 or saustin@smartplug.com

My vessel is currently in Malaysia...wet, hot and humid. Your product seems to solve the problem of heavy corrosion and rainfall at 32C. Can you advise me of a 30A cable that would be highly resistant to UV, temperature and high humidity on a longterm basis.
