SmartPlug Systems hand delivered the first order of the SmartPlug 30 Amp Retrofit Plug and Inlet Combination packages to Fisheries Supply of Seattle, WA on April 19, 2009. That delivery was subsequently followed by a shipment of plugs and inlets to US Distributing in Portland, OR and Svendsen’s Marine Distributing in Oakland, CA. After months of modifications and perfecting the revolutionary design, SmartPlug is excited to finally be able to provide quality shorepower systems to boating enthusiasts.
The SmartPlug team has been busy in these first few days fulfilling orders that have been growing for months in anticipation of this new shorepower system. The marketing and sales teams only expect demand to increase as the features and benefits of the SmartPlug become known among the marine community. SmartPlug is gearing up to double or triple shipping as the remaining product in the 30 Amp line are released and the full 50 Amp line soon becomes available.
The initial and limited product run is only being shipped regionally to various marine distributers in the Northwest. Distribution will expand in the coming months to other areas of the United States. Product should be available in Canada, US territories and Australia by the end of year.

After months of testing, SmartPlug Systems received confirmation that the 30 Amp Retrofit Plug and Inlet Combination passed UL Marine performance requirements as tested by IMANNA Laboratories. The marine performance requirements involve multiple tests, including but not limited to, a 750 hour salt spray test, dialectic voltage withstand test, and accelerated air aging test. These thorough testing procedures verify SmartPlug’s conformance with the requirements of tests based on UL 817 Supplement SA (for Marine Shore Power Cable Sets) in accordance with the applicable requirements of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Std.E-8, National Fire Protection Association Standard for Pleasure and Commercial Motor Craft, NFPA No. 302, and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Regulations Title 33, Chapter1,CFR, Part 183.
The tests concluded that The Boatside Plug, Cord and Inlet Combination are 100% weatherproof both in a high-heat salt mist environment and a simulated rain environment. The assembly showed no signs of moisture after being subjected to a 750 hour Salt Mist test and little reaction to a 70 hour ozone test. The tested units responded with no problems when subjected to 85°C( 185°F) for 72 hours and to 35°C(-31°F) for 72 hours.
The extensive research of SmartPlug Systems has concluded that they are the first shorepower retrofit plug ever to pass marine performance requirements. UL Marine performance requirements are significantly more rigorous than standard UL performance requirements. While the marine standard has been met by many molded shorepower cords, it has never been met by a retrofit plug, until now.
SmartPlug Systems is very excited to be the first shorepower company to achieve this distinction and feels it further reinforces their purpose to provide better and safer shorepower systems to the boating community.
