About

The SmartPlug Shore Power and Boating Safety Blog was created to begin a dialog about a very real, yet often ignored issue in boating safety…shore power failure.  Our CEO Ken Smith has been in the marine business for almost 40 years and in that time has replaced more shore power plugs, cords, inlets and outlets for his customers (and himself!) than he’d care to admit.  In bringing his idea for a safer alternative to market, we discovered that the more we dug, the more we found that no one was really talking about the problem…despite some pretty shocking statistics.  After seeing a sign taped to a box of burned shore power plugs at a local boating supply store reading “Have you checked your shore power lately?” we began to wonder how much people really knew about the problem.  Hence, the SmartPlug blog was born.

  1. SmartPlug,
We love your SmartPlug Shore Power product here at North Ferry, where we use it to connect to the power inlet on our ferries each night. The shore side of the connection still uses a twist lock 30A connector on a pigtail. I’ve read you will be producing a new shore side connector in 2011. Would you be able to furnish a male cable connection before then? We would be able to use your current female cord connector on the pigtail and the hypothetical male cable plug to replace the twist lock on the other end of our cords. Such a male plug would also allow your other customers to make extension cables for their boats.
We would be glad to be a test site and purchase prototypes if you need some real world feedback.
    Thanks in advance,
    – Bridg
